ZSC Lions win Victoria Cup\r\n\r\nLions upset Blackhawks to win \r\n\r\nVictoria Cup.\r\n\r\nBy Karl Huber \r\n\r\nThe 2009 Victoria Cup winners are ZSC Lions Zurich. With the lead and the fans fully behind them the Lions remained focussed in the final period. The Chicago Blackhawks controlled the puck and the action, yet the hosts continued to ask questions with dangerous counter attacks. \r\n\r\n\r\nThe Champions Hockey League winners have secured their second international trophy in a year with a 2-1 (1-1,1-0,0-0) victory against strong favourites the Chicago Blackhawks. \r\n\r\nThe ZSC Lions missed out on a chance to be written into the history books by just 24 hours. Had Tampere not beaten the Florida Panthers a day earlier 3-2 after a penalty shoot-out, the Swiss team would have had the honour of being the first European team to defeat a NHL club in 20 years. \r\n\r\n"It is a highlight of my career. I guess, the Blackhawks have never faced a crowd like this before", said Lions-captain Mathias Seger with the cup in his hands. \r\n\r\nOne thing was clear from the first minute in: the ZSC Lions had taken a lesson from yesterday's game featuring HC Davos. \r\n\r\nThe Swiss Champions League winners began the game with a high tempo and looked to take the game to the Chicago Blackhawks. \r\n\r\n10,000 fans had packed into the Hallenstadion, the large majority of whom were fully behind the team from Zürich. And from the offset they had good reason to be upbeat about their team's chances, yet Blackhawks' goalie Cristobal Huet was equal to the pressure to keep the fans from raising the roof. \r\n\r\nJust seven minutes in and the tables were turned as defenseman Cam Barker stormed in on goal to leave Lions goaltender Ari Sulander no chance. \r\n\r\nThe guests from the NHL had found their feet and were set to call the shots. \r\n\r\nThe reigning European champions were pegged back so effectively that their only chance of scoring was to break quickly. And that's exactly how the home team got back into the game. \r\n\r\nIn the 13th minute Patrik Bärtschi gave the fans reason to crank up the volume. Thibaut Monnet provided the finest of assists allowing the forward to finish past Huet in world-class fashion. \r\n\r\nTwo minutes later and the Lions fans were again on their feet. Cam Barker lost the puck during a Blackhawks powerplay, yet Blaine Down couldn't hold his nerve in front of goal, lifting his shot over. \r\n\r\nAccompanied by the war cries of the Zürch fans, the second period reflected the first in terms of tension. \r\n\r\nThe Chicago Blackhawks controlled the game, yet the Lions had time and time again the chance to break quickly and catch the visitors off guard. Worth noting, however, is that the tempo was significantly subdued at the start of the second period. \r\n\r\nThe difference in class between the sides from the NHL and the Swiss National League A began to fade, with the Lions successfully disrupting the Blackhawks' game with an aggressive approach. \r\n\r\nThe offensive game of the guests, which ran riot against Davos, likewise started to fade, much to the frustration of Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville. \r\n\r\nSo angered was the coach that in the 35th minute he threw his notes down to the ground. Cristobal Huet only just managed to deny Cyrill Buhler, but Lukas Grauwiler was there to tuck home on the rebound to make it 2-1 to the Lions. \r\n\r\nThe Blackhawks struggled to find a suitable response and failed to come up with any ideas to break down the disciplined home defense. \r\n\r\nChicago simply could not find a way through and in the end they lost their rhythm by picking up penalties. \r\n\r\n"We had great respect for the Lions. The are the champions of Europe by good reason. We failed to outskate them on the bigger rink", said Chicago's disappointed Patrick Sharp.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nWith just three minutes to play Patrick Bärtschi missed a glorious chance to kill the Blackhawks off. The goal scorer failed to convert a penalty, leaving the Lions fans nervously counting down the seconds. \r\n\r\nYet the 10,000 fans were soon out of their seats to celebrate the win as the Lions held on to secure their second sensational achievement in a year. The ZSC Lions - the first European team to win the Victoria Cup.\r\n\r\n\r\nQuelle: www.victoria-cup.com\r\n\r\n\r\nTja, und da fällt man als Augenzeuge des Spiels HC Davos - Blackhawks vom Vorabend wirklich vom Glauben ab.

Cam Barker brachte Chicago früh in Führung (7.).
