    Tragic hockey star’s lifesaving legacy

A sad twist in the Yak-42 tragedy reveals that one of Lokomotiv players who died in the crash was anonymously giving money to sick kids, and the last half-million ruble payment was transferred to a young cancer patient minutes before the take-off.
It was several days ago that the parents of 16-year-old Diana Ibragimova from Voronezh learned the real name of the man who saved their daughter’s life. Ivan Tkachenko, captain of the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl hockey club, was sending big sums of money to Voronezh without disclosing his name or expecting any gratitude at all, Lifenews online tabloid reports.
Diana’s mother burst into tears when she learned Ivan had died in a horrible accident. It took her a long time to understand that the man she knew nothing about, just that his name was Ivan, was in fact Ivan Tkachenko, captain of the famous Lokomotiv hockey club.
The hockey player’s secret was disclosed thanks to a well-known Russian blogger, Varfolomeev. In one of his latest posts he wrote that the athlete had regularly been transferring large sums of money to sick children. Diana was one of the several lucky children whom Ivan had patronized.
Ivan transferred money to Diana’s family twice, and both times he asked that his name not be indicated under any circumstances.
“We did not even know who our daughter’s benefactor was, just his first name,” cried Elena, Diana’s mother. “We received 500,000-ruble transfers twice; they both came from an unknown Ivan. I thought he might be a successful businessman and could not imagine he was one of the best-known Russian hockey players. Such a young man!” exclaims Elena.
After the family received the second transfer, they wrote a letter to Ivan, but they never received an answer. Neither Diana nor her mother knew that just minutes after sending the money, Ivan Tkachenko died in a horrific plane crash not far from the city of Yaroslavl.
The modest young hockey player did not like to talk about his philanthropy. Only his closest friends knew that Ivan helped children who were diagnosed with terrible diseases.
“Vanya adored children,” one of Tkachenko’s friends recalled. “His wife is now expecting their third child.”
His relatives say Ivan always rushed to help when he saw a child needed his assistance.
“Ivan did not want anyone to know he was taking part in charity,” said the authorities at the Advita charity fund. “He did not want gratitude; he just helped kids and adults who were in need of his help. He saved many lives!” they added.

With Fourth Straight Win Adler Capture First Place

According to Adler Trainer Harold Kreis there is no such thing as a bad win, while that may be if there is a such thing as an ugly win then that is what the 6,396 fans witnessed on Thursday night. Mannheim took a 3:0 lead into the third period only to see it evaporate to a one point lead in the first five minutes of the period. The Adler held on to win 3:2 (1:0, 2:0, 0:2).
The Adler were clearly the over powering team of the first period putting eleven shots on goal compared to the Tigers two. Straubing was shorthanded for almost five minutes of the first as the referees displayed a zero tolerance for hooking. The Adler’s first power play was typically stagnate and the Tigers had three break away chances even though they were short handed. The power play did not improve much during the next two man-advantages but Yannnic Seidenberg managed to find the back of the net when one of his passes deflected off Straubing’s Michael Bakos on the third power play of the period (19 minute, man-advantage).
Mannheim remained the dominate team during the second period but were having problems finding the key to beating Straubing’s net minder, Barry Brust. During the Adler’s second power play of the period Frank Mauer weaved his way through the Tiger’s defense and beat Brust to give Mannheim a two point lead (33 minute, man-advantage). He was followed three and a half minutes later by Adam Mitchell who scored a breakaway goal to bring the score to 3:0.The Adler were also shorthanded twice during the second but their penalty kill remained strong and Straubing was unable to take advantage of the situations.

At the start of the third period is looked as if the Adler wanted to save their energy for the other three games they have to play in the next six days but they reduced the tempo by too much and almost gave the game away. Just 15 seconds into the third Karl Stewart had already cut the Adler lead by one (41 minute), just over four minutes later Sandro Schonberger cut it by another point (45 minute). It was now a brand new game and Straubing was hungry for more. The game became hectic with neither team able to completely control the period. The chances see-sawed back and forth but neither team was able to use the chances to their advantage. In the 59 minute Straubing pulled their goalie for a sixth attacker but the Adler defense and Felix Bruckmann were able to save the Adler win. The score was 3:2 at the final horn.
The Adler took over first place in the DEL with 12 points just one point ahead of the second place team from Munich. The Iserlohn Rooster are in third place with ten points. The Hamburg Freezers are in fourth place with nine points but are one of the teams to keep an eye on as they have played one less game then the other top three teams. Munich and Mannheim will go head to head on Saturday night in the SAP Arena In a battle for first place; tickets are still available in all price categories.
